March, otherwise known as the month of school cruelty, is finally upon us. Simply put, every U of T student is in for a tumultuous ride. While the weather gradually improves, we are unable to enjoy it. Instead, we are forced to observe it longingly through our windows, unable to abandon our heaps of work.
Sleep deprivation is another fun side effect that tends to accompany the month of March. All-nighters are pulled left and right, which can only mean one thing: Midnight Snacking.
You do it. I do it. We all do it. I mean, how else are we supposed to reward ourselves for hours of work? The problem is, midnight snacking is often pretty unhealthy, which is why we have some snacking suggestions that are both delicious AND nutritious!
- Air Popped Pop Corn
Air Popped Pop Corn is a great choice for a midnight snack that is low in calories and fat and contains little sodium. If you’re finding it a little too bland, sprinkle a bit of chili powder or cinnamon for some flavor.
- Trail mix
How bout some trail mix? Mix up some walnut halves or peanuts with pumpkin seeds and dry cranberries. Add in some banana chips and raisins if you’re really looking to get a variety of flavors. Trail mix is healthy and delicious! You can essentially include whatever you want, and keep your energy going while you work on those papers. Maybe drop in a few M&M’s, we won’t tell anyone. If you’re a trail mix lover, make sure you come out for a Trail Mix showdown during Nutrition Week at the end of March! Stay tuned for UeaT events…
- Peanut Butter Banana Toast
This is a classic. Toast a baguette or some whole-wheat bread and top it off peanut butter and sliced banana. A great way to get some protein in your system.
- Smoothie
My personal favourite is the blueberry and banana smoothie. Ultimately you can get as creative with this as you like. Try using almond milk as a healthier alternative to regular milk, in addition to being insanely delicious. Strawberries, raspberries, kale or quinoa: add whatever you want to this tasty treat!
- Smoothie pops
If you’re not feeling like drinking a smoothie, why not make it into a yummy Popsicle? Mix in a bit of yogurt with your regular smoothie and stick it in the freezer. How good does that sound?
- Edamame
Let’s be real, Edamame is one of the best parts of going out for sushi. Buy some for yourself and snack away. It’s delicious and extremely healthy. Sprinkle a little bit of salt for an extra kick.
- Finger-food vegetables
Last but not least, are finger-food vegetables. They’re delicious and the epitome of nutritious. Make a homemade dip and you’re ready to go!
