Steamed Nian Gao

1Grease a pie dish or cake pan with canola oil.

2Add 1 1/2 inches of water to a large pot (with a steamer rack), and bring to a boil.

3Measure 3/4 cup of water and pour into a microwave safe bowl. Add the brown sugar, and microwave for 1 minute until the sugar is dissolved.

4Pour the sweet rice flour into a large bowl, and add the brown sugar, the remaining 3/4 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of canola oil, and the vanilla extract.

5Stir to combine until smooth.

6Set the cake inside the pot and steam for 1 1/2 hours.

7Check the water level periodically and replenish if needed.

8Allow the cake to cool completely and cover with plastic wrap or serve immediately.

1 1/2 cups water

1 lbs sweet rice flour

2 tbsp canola oil

1 tsp vanilla extract
